I hadn’t quite ‘got it’ until you wrote this. But you are right, you can’t just buy sustainability (ironic? hypocritical?) and it will need to look a little mismatched.

I’m furnishing a few rooms of my house at the moment and have only looked at free or low cost items sold in my local community. I’m embracing the fact it won’t match and am thrilled at how much good quality stuff is out there (albeit with chips/dents/tatty look) that means I don’t have to purchase new.

Originally it was about saving money, now it’s also about the greater good of being a little more sustainable. And that’s the greater value.

And that’s Instagram (or other social media network’s) problem as you highlight. They don’t want it to be or feel good, they want it to look good. Only looking good sells.

We’ve created and are enabling a reinforcing consumerist culture and it’s going to be hard to break it.
