The Google Habit – Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning is a commitment or acknowledgement that you will never stand still in your career (or personal life). Nowadays, standing still actually means you will be moving backwards relative to the fast paced and ever evolving world.

I’ve heard many people say that they don’t have the desire, or more often the time & energy, to constantly be learning. But here’s something to think through which should reduce any concerns; You are already learning every day without even realising it and most of you are doing it with Google. And most of you are doing it using the tools constantly at your side, your smartphone.

I call it:

“The Google Habit”.

Want to know how to make a great macaroni cheese, Google it; Want to know what companies are competing in the same field as yours, Google it; Want to learn how to give better presentations, Google it.

Here’s how it typically works:

You identify the need to learn something

Within 30 seconds you have found your phone

Within 1 minute you have searched and found a source of learning through Google (other search engines are available)

Within 3–5mins you have read or watched the resulting information

From knowledge gap to learning in 5 minutes max. And you do this every day in multiple bite sized chunks as you require it.

You don’t need to become a lifelong learner, you are already one. And it is a Habit; try not picking up your smartphone next time you need some information and you’ll see what I mean.

Happy Learning.
